AX1 Adds Sundance winners

UK producer / distributor AX1 Films has acquired two new award winning films following the Sundance Film Festival in Park City.

CONTRACORRIENTE (Undertow) from Peru is the impressive debut film of Javier Fuentes-Leon and won the 2010 Sundance World Cinema Audience Award.

ZONA SUR (Southern District) by Juan Carlos Valdivia was Bolivia’s entry for this year’s foreign language Oscar and won the Best Director and Best Screenplay awards in the World Cinema section at Sundance 2010.

Both titles were acquired from Los Angeles-based Shoreline Entertainment with deals concluded at the recent Berlin Film Festival.

Frozen River

Grand Jury Prize winner at the Sundance Film Festival, FROZEN RIVER was today nominated for two awards at the 81st Academy Awards.

Melissa Leo received a nomination in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, and writer / director Courtney Hunt received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The Academy Awards are held on 23rd February in Los Angeles and AX1 will release the film in cinemas in May.

London based producer / distributor AX1 Films today announces that it is to partner with Paul Mezey’s New York based Journeyman Pictures to produce THE GIRL, starring Emily Blunt, which is written and will be directed by David Riker. It will be produced by Paul Mezey for Journeyman and by Douglas Cummins for AX1, with Carlo Dusi co-producing.

Riker is a New York-based filmmaker currently living in Mexico. His debut feature, THE CITY (LA CIUDAD), filmed in New York’s Latin American immigrant community, was inspired by the promise of a neo-realist cinema in America. The film won awards at Havana, San Sebastian, and Human Rights Watch International Film Festivals to name a few. Most recently, Riker won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance 2008 for SLEEP DEALER.

AX1 Picks Up Trio of New Titles

UK producer / distributor AX1 Films concludes the acquisition of three new titles for distribution at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF).

THE SEA WALL: widely praised following its world premiere as a Special Presentation at TIFF, director Rithy Panh’s period epic is set in 1931 in French Indochina and is an adaptation of Marguerite Duras’s novel Un Barrage Contre le Pacifique with a leading performance by Isabelle Huppert.

BROKEN LINES to premiere at Venice

AX1 Films is delighted to announce that the company’s recent production, BROKEN LINES will receive its world premiere at Venice-Days (28th August – 6th September 2008). It joins a prestigious line-up of just eleven films and, as a first feature, it will also compete for the "Luigi De Laurentiis" Award, along with other debut films in the Venice International Film Festival's main sections.

Giornate degli Autori (Venice Days) is modelled after the independent spirit of the Directors’ Fortnight Section at Cannes and runs parallel to the Venice International Film Festival as Directors’ Fortnight does with the Cannes International Film Festival. It is directed for the third consecutive year by Fabio Ferzetti.
