Describing the film as "an outstanding work of artistry to touch our souls" the 2002 Berlin Film Festival jury awarded the Best Debut Film Award to Australian Director Ivan Sen, and the Best Young Actress Award to newcomer Danielle Hall, who features in BENEATH CLOUDS. Backed by AX1 Films from script stage, and co-produced by the company, AX1’s managing director Douglas Cummins commented:

AX1 Films is proud to announce that BENEATH CLOUDS will premiere in Official Selection – International Competition at the Berlin Film Festival. Many Aboriginal film-makers have emerged in Australia in recent years, but some of the highest expectations are focused on writer-director Ivan Sen.

'Beneath Clouds' is the simple story of two teenage hitchhikers who meet and fall in love on the road and has absolutely nailed the nature of contemporary Australian race relations. Lena is the light-skinned daughter of an Aboriginal mother and Irish father, on her way to Sydney to look for her missing father. Vaughn is a Murri boy who has escaped from a detention centre to see his dying mother. The story is told on a small canvas and is restrained, understated and finely nuanced, but the meanings are writ large. Watch too for the laconic and very real performances of the two first-time leads.

France’s Euripide Productions, Germany’s Integral Film, Italy’s Veradia Films and AX1 Films are proud to announce the participation in Official Selection of TOSCA, by French director Benoit Jacquot, in the Venice Film Festival. This acclaimed feature film version of the classic opera features Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu - two of the most bankable singers currently available.

Australian actor Anthony La Paglia will join David Wenham in the cast of producer Robert Connolly's writing and directing debut THE BANK, which is in production in Melbourne throughout August and September.

AX1 Films is handling world sales on the thriller, which is set in the world of high finance. Production company Arenafilm's distribution outfit, Footprint Films, has local rights.

The film is being financed by AX1 Films, Australian Film Finance Corporation, Victorian's film agency Cinemedia and pay-TV outfit the Premium Movie Partnership.
